WDA has been contracted to provide a variety of services for the biotechnology and health care industries. Services have ranged from initial master planning to complete surveying, engineering, permitting and construction support. The following is a sampling of our project experience:

AstraZeneca, Westborough, Massachusetts
WDA serves as a specialized consultant to AstraZeneca providing advice on numerous ongoing projects ranging from updates to the previous master plan for the 60± acre site, to feasibility analyses for satellite properties as well as providing civil engineering, surveying and permitting services to meet local regulatory requirements. The current master plan calls for a total of three new buildings totaling 450,000 square feet for use as research, laboratory, warehouse and office space.

New England Biolabs, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts
WDA was hired to prepare a feasibility analysis and perform master planning for the development of 400,000 square feet of research, laboratory and office space on a 110 acre site fronting on Route 128 in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Services included wetland and vernal pool analysis and wildlife habitat inventory, research of record utility plans, topographic and boundary plan compilation, preparation of numerous conceptual site grading and access studies, preliminary presentations to various town agencies, and eventually included the rezoning of the parcel at Town Meeting to allow research laboratory uses on site.

270 Albany Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts
WDA services included a topographic survey to locate existing buildings, pavement and utility connections, research at the City Engineering Office and preparation of civil/site engineering drawings for the conversion of this 65,000 square foot office building to research/laboratory use. WDA services also included permitting of the project through the City of Cambridge and providing construction support.

735 Concord Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts
WDA was hired by the construction manager for this project to provide supporting site, civil engineering services for the renovation of this existing facility on Concord Avenue for research/laboratory use. WDA services included research at the City Engineer’s Office, performance of an on-the-ground topographic survey and preparation of site engineering drawings for connection or replacement of utilities to meet the project needs and the City of Cambridge design requirements. This project is being built for the Genetics Institute.


Yellick Property, Northborough, Massachusetts
WDA services for this oddly shaped parcel included town and Registry of Deeds research, compilation of an existing conditions base plan, wetlands and riverfront protection area identification, and site planning to set the location and layout for a three story, 70,000 sf assisted living facility and associated parking and access drives. The unique design allowed the driveway within the riverfront area with the removal of previously “constructed” improvements and restoration of altered areas. This created a natural park and trail system adjacent to the river for residents of the project.


Northwoods Medical Center, Taunton, Massachusetts
WDA was hired to perform topographic and property line surveys, schematic design, construction documents and permitting assistance for a radiation therapy unit addition. Our site engineers developed several alternatives to solve the parking, circulation and utility issues that affect the preferred building site.
