MICHAEL DOWHAN, RLA
Landscape Architect: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, South Carolina
Harvard University Graduate School of Design - Master in Landscape Architecture
University of Rhode Island - Bachelor of Landscape Architecture
Mike is an award-winning landscape architect and urban designer with over twenty three years of experience in the design of the built environment, with a specific focus in highly urbanized areas. His responsibilities at WDA include involvement with the overall design direction of the firm; business development, including client procurement and marketing of the firm’s services; comprehensive project direction and management; and multi-disciplinary project team coordination. His extensive experience working with private developers, municipal agencies, building committees, owner’s project managers, architects, engineers, and other allied design professionals enables him to assume a critical leadership role in the coordination and execution of complex multi-disciplinary design projects
Mike's current work is focused on the redevelopment and repurposing of underutilized or abandoned sites, including Quinn Square in Central Falls, Eaton Square in Needham, Bay State Green in Westborough, Meeting Place Park in Westborough, and Rocky Point in Warwick. His sustainable development work includes the design of the landscape infrastructure, parks and open spaces for Westborough Village, a smart growth transit-oriented village, as well as the site and landscape design for the Devens Zero-Net Energy Affordable Housing prototypes. His streetscape work includes the design of the landscape infrastructure for the Apponaug Circulator in Warwick, as well as the Water Street Streetscape along the historic Warren waterfront. Mike's recent K-12 education work includes the site development for the Freeman-Kennedy School in Norfolk and the West Bridgewater Middle-Senior High School.
Prior to joining WDA, Mike served in a number of progressively responsible design and management positions for award-winning design firms in New York City and Boston. He has been involved with projects that have received awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Institute of Architects, and the American Planning Association. Most recently, he presented his work at Bay State Commons at the American Planning Association Annual National Conference, and selected projects displaying some of his most recent work were included in the Windows on Architecture Gallery Exhibition as part of Gallery Night: Providence.
Mike's appreciation for working in densely urban areas is inspired by his upbringing in a Northern Rhode Island mill city along the banks of the Blackstone River. Even though he now splits his time between Providence and the South Coast of Massachusetts, he still (and always will) refer to himself as a Rhode Islander. Mike enjoys zig-zagging around the United States by car to visit new places with his family every summer, and takes pride in the fact that they are one of the few families that have actually stopped at South Of The Border. He also enjoys attending concerts by bands that were popular in the 1980's. He has attended every New England Patriots Super Bowl victory parade, and, more importantly, the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup victory parade. Mike will no longer be attending victory parades, as he is more than thrilled to now devote all of his time and energy to his son, Chace.
